UPDATE - October 2022

On October the 7th they had their first sidewalk chalk competition with six 3 man teams. Below are a few of  their final projects. The buzz was amazing for being inside a maximum security prison. They appreciated your suggestion of using the paints as they made everything just pop. They were thinking of setting up another event in April for the art room leaders and then hopefully another competition later next year. Daniel has thrown down the gauntlet to another prison in Missouri to see if we can have a little friendly competition and grow this into a program.

You never know who you will inspire with your art, but it is one of the reasons I truly enjoy creating 3D street art and murals.

I was recently contacted out of the blue by Daniel Krachey, who is an Institutional Activities Coordinator at the Jefferson City Correctional Center (a maximum security prison) in Missouri.  He has run the art room there for the last 11 years. Recently, a new Warden came in, and was really into thinking "outside the box" and looking for unique ways to help with morale and developing skills.  So Daniel asked if the art room students could do sidewalk chalk art project/event.  The Warden gave it a thumbs up!

Daniel found my website and utilized the info to help these first time sidewalk art enthusiasts. None of the inmates had ever worked on a concrete canvas before, but they were all very enthusiastic about trying a new art form.

The picture to the left is their very first attempt and I think they did a great job!  Daniel said it was a good opportunity for the artists to learn how to work together (which is always a good skill to have), in addition to honing their drawing and sketching skills.
